Peacemaker Conversation: “Solidarity through Organizing”

Pam McMichael and Carla F. Wallace with Cory Lockhart

Thursday, September 26, 12:00 – 1:00pm, via Zoom and Facebook LIVE

Join us virtually for a Peacemaker Conversation between long-time social justice activists and organizers, Pam McMichael and Carla Wallace, and local nonviolence educator, Cory Lockhart. Be uplifted by stories of successful organizing, inspired by creative nonviolent actions and movements, and energized by the power of collective action.

Pam McMichael (she/her) is long-time social justice activist who grew up working class in rural, central Kentucky. She credits Black and white civil rights leaders, among others, for bringing her up as a movement person, and her parents for the values which put her on that path. She served for twelve years as the Executive Director of the renowned Highlander Research and Education Center located in east Tennessee and is a co-founder of three organizations: local and statewide Fairness Campaign, the regional Southerners on New Ground (SONG), and the national Showing Up for Racial Justice (SURJ). Her international solidarity work has included South Africa, Central America, and the Middle East. Currently, she is a Tri-Chair of the Kentucky Poor People’s Campaign and a Tri-Chair of the Steering Committee of the National Poor People’s Campaign.

Carla F Wallace has been part of organizing for change in the South for over 40 years, with a focus on her home state of Kentucky. She is a co-founder of Showing Up for Racial Justice (SURJ) which moves white people, in particular, those who are poor working class and rural, to be part of the multi racial struggle for collective liberation. Mentored by southern civil rights activists in the Black Liberation Movement and by white racial justice fighter, Anne Braden, Carla is also a co-founder of Louisville’s Fairness Campaign, which has been nationally honored for the work winning LGBTQ equity by centering racial justice and connecting community organizing and electoral work. Carla has been engaged in international solidarity work for over four decades, including leadership in the Anti-Apartheid movement for a Free South African and the ongoing work for a Free Palestine.

Cory Lockhart is a teacher, writer, public speaker, and peacemaker. She facilitates classes and workshops for teens and adults on nonviolence and nonviolent communication and also helps groups navigate difficult conversations. She was the 2016 recipient of the Ursuline Sisters of Louisville Angeline Award. Learn more through her website: corylockhart.com.
