Simple Dinner and Documentary: "Fire in the Land of Snow"

Friday, March 7, 5:30pm Dinner; $6:00 Movie

“Fire in the Land of Snow” is an hour-long documentary created by Voice of America, that explores the causes behind the 118 self-immolations known to have taken place in Tibet between 2009 and 2013. Combining smuggled videos, first-hand accounts and interviews with experts, scholars, and officials, this film provides an in-depth and comprehensive look at the recent history of Tibet and the powerful forces that lie at the heart of one of the largest waves of political self-immolations in history.  “This documentary provides a sobering and comprehensive look at the reasons driving people to take their own lives in such a painful and dramatic way,” said VOA Director David Ensor. “By broadcasting this film and streaming it online, we are also giving audiences in Tibet and China access to information they simply cannot get on domestic media.”

DGCEC offers this educational evening as part of our 2025 commemoration of the 66th anniversary of the

1959 national uprising against the Chinese Communist occupation and the current debilitating oppression that continues inside Tibet today.  PLEASE NOTE: There are disturbing images in this movie.
